                                          GOOGLE ADSENSE..................

I have been using Google AdSense to monetize my blogs and websites for as long as I remember. In fact it was the first method I ever tried (I made a whooping $15 on my first month… back in 2005). Over the years I migrated to other methods (e.g., direct sponsors and affiliate marketing), which made AdSense become merely an inventory filler. I was still making around $1,000 monthly from it, but whenever I could I would use other methods over it.
Then some months ago I started noticing an upward trend on the CPC of my sites, and I figured that I should give AdSense another try. I started applying some tricks here and there, and the next month I made over $3,000 with it (that is combining all my sites). I was pleasantly surprised, and I decided to keep using it actively on some sites.
In this article I want to share with you the tips and tricks I used to triple my AdSense earnings in one month.

1. I added units to my Big Websites

Daily Blog Tips and Daily Writing Tips are my largest websites in terms of traffic. They are getting close to one million monthly page views (combined). Despite that I was not using AdSense on them, mainly because the direct sponsorship model was working relatively well.
Some months ago I decided to load some AdSense units on the sites, however, and the results were very positive. Around 70% of the boost I generated to my earnings came from these two sites. At the same time I managed to keep the other monetization methods working fine, and no reader ever complained about the new ads (more on that later).
Even if your blog is already making money with direct sponsors and affiliate marketing, therefore, you could still manage to increment your earnings by strategically adding some AdSense units.

2. I added units to my Small Websites

As many webmasters do, I have a bunch of small websites scattered around the web. Some are on free hosted platforms like Blogger, and others are self hosted sites that I abandoned along the way. Most of these sites still get traffic, however. Not much, but combined the numbers get decent.
I figured that adding AdSense units to all these sites could yield some money, and I was right. The main reason is that, since these are abandoned sites and don’t have loyal visitors, I can place the units very aggressively. The result was a very high CTR (Click-through rate), which compensates the small traffic levels.
Don’t underestimate the earning potential of small websites, especially if you are willing to place AdSense units aggressively.

3. I used the Large Units

If you want to make money with AdSense you’ll inevitably need to use one of these units: the 336×280 large rectangle, the 300×250 rectangle, the 120×600 large skyscraper or the 728×90 leaderboard.
Whenever I tried to use smaller units the results were disappointing. Even if I positioned them aggressively the CTR was just too low.
All four units mentioned above can produce good results, but the best performing one is by far the 336×280 large rectangle, and that is the one I used to boost my earnings.

4. I placed the Units above the Fold

My first trial was to place the 336×280 large rectangle between the post and the comments section of my blogs. The results were OK. I then decided to try placing them below the post titles for one week, and the CTR skyrocketed. In fact I still need to find a placement/unit combination that will beat placing a 336×280 unit below post titles.
I knew this rule, but I guess I needed to test and get confirmation. The rule is: if you want to make money with Google AdSense, you must place your units above the fold.

5. I Focused on Organic Traffic

My main concern with adding a large AdSense unit right below my post titles was that some of the loyal readers could get annoyed with it. At the same time I knew that loyal readers become ad blind quite fast, and that the bulk of my money would come from organic visitors (i.e., people coming via search engines to my posts).
To solve this problem I decided to display the large rectangle only on posts older than seven days . It worked like a charm, as loyal readers don’t even notice the ad units when they are browsing through my recent posts, and organic visitors almost always see the ads because they usually land on posts older than seven days.

6. I started using AdSense for Search

I was not sure how much money I would be able to make with AdSense for Search, but I was not happy with the search results provided by WordPress, so I decided to give it a shot anyway.
Currently I am making around $60 monthly with AdSense for Search. It is not much, but if you sum it over one year we are talking about $720. On top of that the search results are as relevant as you’ll get, so it is a win win situation.

7. I started using AdSense for Feeds

Another AdSense product I decided to try was the AdSense for Feeds one. I opted to display the ads below my feed items (you can also place them on top, but this would be too intrusive in my opinion). The results here were pretty good, both in terms of CTR and earnings.
You obviously need a large RSS subscriber base to make this work, but I am guessing that even with a couple thousand subscribers you could already make $100 monthly from feed ads.

8. I played around with section targeting

Section targeting is an AdSense feature that allows you to suggest specific sections of your site that should be used when matching ads.

I found that on niche and small websites section targeting can help a lot. Often times Google was displaying unrelated ads on these sites because there weren’t enough pages. After using section targeting I managed to increase the relevancy of the ads and consequently the CTRs.

9. I tested with Different Colors and Fonts

If you enabled both image and text ads on your units you should be able to customize the colors and fonts. I did some testing with both of these factors, and it helped to increase the numbers. Nothing dramatic, but it was definitely worth my time.
You just need to track your CTR for a couple of weeks. Then change the color or font and track it for another week, seeing if you can beat the original CTR. If you can, keep the new format. If you the performance decreased, try a new color or font and track the CTR for another week, until you find the optimal combination.
On my sites the best results came from making the ad units merge with the look of the site, but on some sites contrasting colors perform better, so testing is a must.

Even before I tell you something about Google AdSense earnings and you learn in this tutorial about tips & tricks on how you can make tons of money from AdSense, I would like to commit if there is any easiest money making option on internet, then its AdSense. I have tried almost all the online businesses and yes I made money from many of them but if there is anything which can give you so much money with ease then its Google AdSense.
Yes, there isadsense-earning-secrets unlimited potential to make money from Google AdSense but still there are many people in India and worldwide who does not have any idea on how to make money from AdSense.
Not only this, there are people (I don’t know if they are living in rock) who have not heard of the this word “AdSense”. So I am going to write this easiest AdSense tutorial, keeping those people in mind.
If you are interested to know more about me & my earning, you can read, how I started online jobs journey.

So What is Google AdSense?

In a very simple term, Google AdSense is an online advertising system run by Google. Its an opposite application of Google AdWords where advertiser from all over the world signup to create and show their ads on Google and its publisher sites (like my sites).
Google places those ads on its search engine and millions of publishers sites who applied for Google AdSense. Google does not charge anything to display these ads but only when someone clicks the ad.
So if I applied for Google AdSense and Google shows its advertisers ads on my website then I will get paid for each and every click a visitor clicks on AdSense ads on my website. I have already given more details to understand “What is Google AdSense?” in my earlier article so I recommend you to read that basics of AdSense. This article will clear your concept about AdSense.
And now before we proceed further, I would like to tell you 3 myths about AdSense so you can very well decide whether to read this full article or leave from here.

Myth 1

Many people I talk to about AdSense and when I explain them in simple words that I have a website, people visit my site and when they click on the Adsense ads on my site, I make money. Almost all people say – “But I never clicked on any such ads and I think nobody clicks”. Are you one of them? Then how millions of people around the world are making 1000s of dollars.

Truth & Potential

Just read the fact here from Google – “Google’s partner sites generated revenues, through AdSense programs, of $3.44 billion, or 30% of total revenues, in the fourth quarter of 2012.” Reference – http://investor.google.com/earnings/2012/Q4_google_earnings.html and Google distributes shares 68% of the income with its publishers (people like me).
It means Google annual revenue from AdSense is $13.76 Billion (INR 75,000 Crore) and he paid $9.35 billion (INR 51,000 Crore) to its publishers. So what you think of this amazing figure. Who is taking earning how much from this $6.8 billions. And yes, do you want some share from this 51,000 Crore??
To make you more convinced on the potential just download here one of latest article titled as “Google Made Me Rich”, published in Economic Times on 22nd September 2011. Download this here from Labnol.org. This article shows how much money people like Amit Agarwal, Amit Bhawani and many others from India are earning from Google AdSense.

Myth 2

You need to have web designing knowledge and you must have good technical knowledge. You must have good writing skills etc.

Truth

Absolutely not. Yes, knowing them keeps an added advantage but that is not required. What needed is only your desire to make money. Although there are hundreds of such example I can show you but I am a live example for you.
I am making money from AdSense from the last 5 years and I have number of blogs but I neither have any web designing knowledge nor any writing skills.
Still I don’t know anything about PHP, HTML or anything in web designing. And yes, I commit,  if you ask me to write even 1 sentence 4-5 years back, I could not be able to write. I will tell you how this is possible to earn lots of money from AdSense even if you don’t have much knowledge about these things.

Myth 3

This myth makes me irritating. When people (even some highly educated) comments like “I don’t think people make any money online”. There is only scams on internet and no opportunity.

Truth

I just ask them either don’t comment anything if you don’t know or get educated and then comment. Scam comes only after opportunity. AdSense, Clickbank, CJ.com, Amazon, Fiverr, ELance,, blogging and hundreds of best money making opportunities available that its impossible to comment like this but still without any knowledge or hearing some useless stories from their near and dear, they comment like this. So just get educated.
So enough, now let’s understand how to make big AdSense earnings-

So How To Begin With AdSense?

You need to have one website or a blog or a free blog to begin with AdSense. Yes, absolutely true. That is the only thing Google demands to apply for its program. And not only this, there must be some visitors who visit your site on daily basis.
All these things looks difficult to listen but believe me 5 years back when it was bit difficult to create a site, I was able to create one and use this for AdSense but now things has changed a lot. With the help of WordPress, creating a blog is like a child’s play.
With in next 1 hr, your blog could be ready to publish contents. There are number of other free options as well to create a site and start Google AdSense earnings. Just check them one by one:

Blogger.com for AdSense Earning

Blogger.com is a free service by Google where you can create your free blog. As the service is by Google, you can directly apply for AdSense and place AdSense ads on your blog from your blogger account itself. Learn more about this from blogger’s tour. Check this YouTube video to learn how easy is to create a blog on Blogger.com.
Once you create a blogger blog, make yourself familiar with different features and check how it changes your blog by applying some settings. It’s FREE and its your, so don’t hesitate to do some R&D.
Yes, you can even create one trial blog first and once you become confident, create another blogger.com blog for AdSense. There are many places where you can create a free website or blog like Blogger.com, but you can’t use many of them for AdSense.
Beside this, Blogger blog is very user friendly and being a Google product, your contents will get more love. Once your blogger blog is ready to publish the contents, you are ready for the next step i.e. writing on blogs.
Don’t worry, if you have not written even a single sentence like me in your whole life, I am going to tell you how you can become an expert in writing. But before that, just have a look on other options then blogger.com.

AdSense Revenue Sharing Websites

A revenue sharing website is something where you can create a site, write contents and promote it and share the money generated through your site.
There are hundreds of revenue sharing sites like HubPages, Squidoo etc. where you can create a free account and start writing on this. But what makes HubPages or Squidoo or any other site different then blogger.com.
The main difference is that all the contents written on such sites gets very high authority in search engines and they rank well as the contents gets matured. In blogger.com, your blog will be a separate blog and if your blog is poorly ranked, its contents will not rank high.
The other difference is that all the settings are ready in revenue sharing sites and you just have to write contents once your account is created.
In other terms, you can say, there is very limited control on the setting and look and feel of these sites.
There are so many people who are making full time money through Google AdSense and other earning programs just by writing on these sites like HubPages.com, Squidoo.com etc. Here are the top 5 revenue sharing sites, you can start earning with –
Not only AdSense, they will also share revenue generated through affiliate marketing sites Clickbank, Amazon, eBay etc. Here is one of the best article on how to make money from HubPages. Just check, read and understand this.
Although both blogger.com and revenue sharing sites are good to start with bit both have limited scope in terms of writing, designing and many other things you want to do. Because its free, you are always treated like a guest there. There are many constraints, and you can’t use full potential of your writing.
And that is where majority of people don’t like such freeware. They go for their their own paid hosting with their own domain like www.YourName.com. And by using free blogging software like WordPress, you can create a killer blog.

AdSense Earnings With WordPress.org Blog

I can bet there will be thousands of people like me who can say “I am in Love with WordPress” or “WordPress is my second wife”. After all WordPress has changed the lives of millions of people and they work day and night with this.
Such people are known as either blogger or internet marketer. It may take some time to understand how to create a WordPress blog and how to make money with Google AdSense and other programs using WordPress but once you know WordPress, you will sing the same song like thousands of people and off course like me.

So what is WordPress?

Wikipedia explains – “WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and content management system (CMS) powered by PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet’s “top 1 million” websites and as of August 2011 powers 22% of all new websites. WordPress is currently the most popular CMS in use on the Internet.”
But in a very simple language – If you have your own domain and hosting (purchased from a hosting service provider) like GoDaddy, HostGator etc., you can install the WordPress software on your hosting and start a WordPress blog. Then you have complete freedom to design your website as you want.
You are free to add as many free Apps or plugins as you like in your blog to function your blog as per your wish. Thousands of themes and plugins are available to change the layout, design, settings and the functioning of your blog.

It means, its hard to do all these things!!

No, never. Its very much easy. Just imagine, your first time you tried to learn riding a bike or driving a four wheeler. You must be thinking you will never learn this. But once you learned, you thought how easy is this?
Why you never thought, when thousands of dumb people can learn this, why don’t you? So its difficult till you see this from a distance. Yes, if someone need to learn any technical course to create a blog, then it may be difficult but its like a learning a 4 wheeler and anyone can learn this. just check here the simple steps-
  1. Purchased your domain & hosting from Hosting provider and created an account.
  2. Login to your account and installed WordPress on your hosting with a simple click. You got your WordPress username and password.
  3. Login to your WordPress account, install a free theme, some plugins and your blog is ready. WordPress has written a very well documentation on this topic and that you can access from WordPress Codex. Just from this documentation, you will learn all about WordPress settings.

But how much this cost?

Oh, that’s not much at all. You can buy your domain and hosting in just $60 for 1 year. With some tricks and discount coupons, you can even get a good deal well below $60. So I don’t think, it’s something very big to try WordPress blog rather then using Blogger.com or Revenue sharing sites.
Even if you earn $1 a week from AdSense, you can recover your hosting charges. But who the hell is doing all these things for $1 a week. You need a very big AdSense income. So WordPress blogs with lots of smart and hard word and your desire to earn and learn can make you achieve this.

Content Writing – Next step in creating Google AdSense site

No one is a born writer. Writing comes by experience or by knowledge. Every person in this world has interest in at least 1 topic. It means, there is at least 1 topic, you will take interest to read in newspaper, TV, internet blogs, in your friends circle or anywhere when you heard about that topic.
You are a health conscious, you take more interest in health related topics, you are a cricket or football fan, you will watch cricket or football on TV, read more in newspaper or discuss with your friend.
Your interest may be finance, relationships, tourism, politics, mobiles, gadgets, Bollywood, Hollywood and endless topics of interest. So when there is some discussion on this, you can speak about that. So when you can speak something, you can even write that thing.
And yes, writing is easier then speaking as you don’t get more time to speak but you get so much time before you write another sentence. So you are getting my point? Am I right or Am I right (KD language)?

Write you already know

So what I want to say? I am just asking you to start writing about what you already know. People want to hear you, what you know and what’s your opinion and objections related to some topics.
People want to listen what you want about xyz, what is your review, where is your objection, why you like something or why you dislike something. They want to listen everything from you.
Get more & more knowledge about the topic by reading on others blogs, books, newspapers and write what you learned in your own words. More appealing contents you write on your blogs, more people will like them and refer their friends by email, facebook, twitter etc.
And yes, the biggest source of traffic i.e Google is watching all these things and once appreciated by many, Google will send more traffic on your website. More people visit your site, means more earnings through Google AdSense.

Source of Writing

People have already written everything about every topic, so you need to write something different in different way. There are many source of contents on internet and you can subscribe to the blogs of some popular people in your niche.
You can even use Google Alerts so that whenever someone writes about something, it will reach you directly. by email You can watch videos on YouTube and other video sharing sites. You can subscribe them. Read everywhere you can and only reading a lot can make you write some good contents.

Writing limit and frequency –

Try to write on regular basis at least 1 article a week. Write minimum 500 words to 1500 words article every week. Readers are not interested to read beyond 1500 words so try to shorten the article and write only important points if the article is long. Making this habit will ensure steady traffic from Google and so steady income from AdSense.

Next Step – Apply for Google AdSense account

This is one of the very crucial point as you will not make any money if AdSense rejects your application. According to AdSense policy, you must have a very useful site with 6 months old domain. But don’t worry as there are many cases, AdSense approves the account even for new sites and blogs.
Don’t think of AdSense for at least 1 month. Only focus on writing and quality writing. Write at least 10-12 high quality article in your blog before you apply for AdSense. Once your site become at least 1 month old, you can apply for AdSense at Google.com/AdSense.
It takes 2-7 days to get the approval from Google AdSense. In most of the cases, Google will give you approval if you follow as I said. In a rare case, they may reject your application. You can then write more articles and apply again after 1 month and now there is very good chance they will approve your account.
Note –  Don’t try to get your approval from others, who sell AdSense account. They may work for temporary basis but once deactivated, you may be permanently banned to open a Google AdSense account. Try to get approval your own way.

Next Step – Start Earning with Google AdSense

Once you get the approval, you can think of making money on AdSense. If you are really looking AdSense as a continuous source of income then don’t expect any money in the first 3 to 6 months. You are building a complete AdSense empire, so it takes time to build an empire.
Here are some of the steps you can follow if your blog is ready and you write on your blog on regular basis.

Use AdSense on your blog

To use AdSense ads on your blog, just login to your AdSense account, then click on ‘My Ads’ and then Ad Units from the Content. After clicking on Ad Units click on ‘New Ad Units’
adsense-new-ad-units
After clicking on New Ad Units, it will ask you a different options for settings as explained below in the image-
adsense-ads-settings
red-arrow Use the name section to give some name to the ad unit.
red-arrow
Then it will ask for you the size of the ads. There are many different sizes of the ads one big wide Leaderboard (728×90), vertical Skyscrapper (160×600 or 120×600), Square (200×200 or 250×250) or rectangles (300×250, 336×280).
You can use them as per your website requirement but initial 4 Ad Sizes given there in the recommended list gives the maximum earnings. Other then these types of ads, there are link ads as given in the end of the drop down menu.
They are not actual ads but they are the link to the ads so when a person clicks on the ad link, it shows number of ads and if that person click on any of the ad, you get paid.
red-arrow Third column is Ad Type. Google uses Text based, image based and rich media ads for AdSense. You can decide which type of ads you want to go with by trying different ads at different times and see which type of ad give you more earnings.
red-arrow Custom Channels – A custom channel lets you group ad units however you choose, such as by size or location on a page. You can track performance by custom channel. You may have many blogs and many sections on your site so you can use different custom channels to track how your channel is performing at different places.
red-arrow Ad Style – It works for text ads only as you can change font, color, background color of your ads. Giving style similar to your website or blog theme will give you more clicks from the visitors.
red-arrow Just click “save and get code”. Once you click that, you will be taken to a page with some JavaScript code. Just copy that code and paste in your blog in between your contents through some WordPress plugins or in sidebar so that your visitors can see the AdSense ads and you make money from ads.

So What Next??

A million dollar question. There are thousands of people who don’t have idea on how to make very big money from Google AdSense. Its not sufficient to know what I have written above. There is much more about Google AdSense which if you learn can make tons of money. Even tens of thousands of publishers who want to make money through Google AdSense using blogs and other sites don’t know how to improve their earnings 5 times or 10 times with very minimal effort. The Google AdSense solution is used by millions of web masters around the world. Some of them have great success and good income, while others get only a few dollars.
Here we will share some basic tips which are known to help increase the revenue generated through Google AdSense.
First, you should choose the advertisement block format which best suits your web site visual style. The experience shows that the 336x280 Large Rectangle, the 300x250 Medium Rectangle, and the 160x600 Wide Skyscraper are the most effective shapes. Still, you should mind the visual appearance of your web pages when you insert the AdSense code. If you have a little space for ads, the best solution will be the link unit format.
Additionally, you should pick the most suitable color palette for your ads block. If you have a light background on your web site, it is better to use a similar light palette for the AdSense box. The contrast choice for an ads box palette is good only for web sites with dark background. Still, it is better to pick a color which already exists in your web site.
It is better to create an ads unit which includes both text and images. In this way both will be displayed and this will increase the chance to get a click on an advertisement by a web site visitor.
Next, you should consider the location of the ads on your web pages.
Probably the best position of the advertisements is in the top / header of your site. However, this can break the consistency of your content, so you should be careful using such a solution. Other good locations are just below the navigation bar, above the footer and in the left menu area. You should always put yourself in the visitors' shoes and look to the web site from their point of view. If the ads block makes you feel uncomfortable while browsing the web site, you should consider a different position or formatting.
Additionally, you should define the number of the advertisement units per page. There are some restrictions about it. You are allowed to have up to three advertisement units per page (in addition to three link units and three referral units). If you have a web site with a lot of content, which requires the visitors to scroll down the pages or you manage a forum or a blog, it is wise to put more AdSense blocks. However, always make sure that the main unit which will generate the major part of the revenue is loaded first in the web site source code. In case you wonder, if you place more than 3 ads units on a page only the first 3 will appear.

A Complete AdSense Guide for Beginners

In this guide we shall explore various facets of Google Adsense program. First, we will begin with a brief introduction to Adsense program. Then we will talk about the relation between Google Adwords and Google Adsense.
  • Next is to understand how Adsense program works. Moreover, we will also discuss role of advertisers & publishers in this program. We shall also talk about users of Adsense and their profile.
  • Then we will move on to discussing how publishers, advertisers and Google itself is benefitting from this program. Next we will be looking why Advertisers and especially publishers love Adsense.
  • The guide would be incomplete without a discourse on competition faced by Google Adsense program. Then we will compare this program in India and USA. In addition to this, you will also come to know top beneficiaries of Adsense program in India.
  • Finally, we’ll conclude this guide on debating issues like lack of transparency from Google’s side, abuse of Adsense program by users and then Google’s criticism followed by future this program.
So let us begin

What is Google Adsense?

It is useless to reinvent the wheel. Hence I will not give my definition as it is available on Wikipedia. So according to WikipediaGoogle AdSense is a program run by Google Inc. that allows publishers in the Google Network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video, and rich media adverts that are targeted to site content and audience.”
I hope, the definition is quite clear but again I’ll again put across in my words.
When you go online and visit a website, you might have noticed ads showing in between the web page you’re reading. Those ads are nothing but Google Adsense ads. It is also known as contextual advertising. Check the image below for demo of AdSense ads on websites –
adsense ads demo
Now, before we move on, I should clarify meaning of certain terms that would be used again and again in this guide.
Publishers – Publishers are bloggers or website owners who create content where Google allows them to show various ads on behalf of advertisers.
Advertisers – As I pointed-out in my previous paragraph advertisers are individuals who pay an amount to Google for showing their ads on publisher’s blog or website.
In other words, you can say publishers are thousands of bloggers & web-owners who create content for money and advertisers are those business owners who want to sell or advertise their products using publisher’s blog.

Relation between Google Adwords and Google Adsense

In order to get an inner understanding of Google Adsense program we need to know Google Adwords program. A new term has been introduced here, Google Adwords.
Now, what is Google Adwords?
Google Adwords and Google Adsense are basically two sides of same coin.
By reading above paragraph you might have got some understanding of Adsense program. So, here we shall only discuss Adwords program.
Google Inc generates its 90% of the revenue from Google Adwords. All the large, medium and small size business owners would like to sell their products to customers around the world.
In order to reach targeted customers in quick time these business owners make use of Adwords program. Here, they pay Google to show their ads on either search result page or on the content of a blog (Adsense).
Therefore, Google Inc totally runs only on the money paid by these business owners.
In coming paragraph, we shall discuss about Adsense program.
It is only by reading next paragraph you’ll get a clear idea how Adwords and Adsense programs are intertwined with each other.
I will talk little bit about Adwords ads. They are of two types; one is shown on right hand side of the search engine result. You might have noticed whenever you search something; a column of ads would appear on right side of the screen. Those are Adwords ads, business owners pay Google for showing those ads.

Second is contextual ads shown on the publisher’s content called nothing but Adsense as shown in the first image in this article taken from ‘Get Sarkari Naukri’ site.

How Google Adsense Works?

Well! It is very simple. As I explained in last paragraph, business owners would pay Google for showing ads on publisher’s website.
Google Adsense is a program designed only for bloggers & site owners, unlike Adwords which is for business owners.
Now a publisher (normally called blogger) has to apply Google for Adsense approval. If he is approved then Google would allow him to show ads on his website.
Whenever, people or visitors comes to the publisher’s website in search of good content and they click on Adsense ad then Google pays money for every Click to the publisher.
Google pays publishers from the money that it is getting from advertisers. Advertisers pay Google for each click. The money paid by Google to publishers is 68% of what advertisers pay them and rest 32% Google takes away as commission.
To put it in simple way, if an advertiser pays Rs 100 to Google for one click on Adsense Ads by an online visitor then Google gives Rs 68 to the owner of the website on which ads are showing (publishers) and remaining Rs 32 Google takes away.
Thus, Google takes money from advertisers and gives large chunk of it to publishers and remaining keeps with itself.
Hence, it would be clear now, how Adwords and Adsense program are interlinked with each other.
Let us look at various ways of showing Adsense ads on a website:
  • Adsense for Content: Nothing but contextual advertisement
  • Adsense of Feeds: Ads will show up on feeds
  • Adsense of Search: Ads will come on search
  • Adsense for Domain: Place advertisements on domain names
  • Adsense of Video: Ads on YouTube Videos
Some terminologies that are commonly used in Google Adsense are:
  • CPC: Cost Per Click – The amount that publishers gets when visitors clicks on the Ads. It could be from 10 cents to $2 or even more.
  • CTR: Click Through Rate – How many visitors click on those ads. If 100 people came to your site and only one of them clicks then CTR is 1%, if 2 clicks then CTR 3%, if 3 clicks then 4%.
  • Views: Total number of impression blogger receives for his blog.
  • Visitors: How many people came to your blog.

Eligibility & Role of Publishers and Advertisers for Adsense & Adwords Respectively

Eligibility of Publishers and Advertisers

Not every publisher gets approval for Adsense program. Early rules for getting an approval for Adsense program were very relaxed but now Google has made it bit difficult.
You could read their term and conditions in details by going here.
I would only like to add that Google wants good content from publishers.
Advertisers have nothing to do with Adsense directly. They depend on Adwords program.
Coming to Advertisers, there is no eligibility for advertisers to use Adwords programs. Only thing they need is money to bid for keywords on daily basis. Google would show ads on the top depending upon the amount of money you are ready to pay Google. Compared to other advertisers if you pay more then Google would show your ads on the top.
So the eligibility is how much you can pay to Google.

Role of Publishers and Advertisers

Role of a publisher is to create content which is unique and relevant. They need to write content which solves the problem of online visitors. Creating great content has always been a great challenge. Moreover, if publishers create good content then in return they will be rewarded by Google.
Role of advertisers is very crucial. It is only because of them Google is running. If Google does not have advertisers then there would be no Adsense program.

Prime Users of Google Adsense – Demographics

Now we will talk about users of Adsense program. As you already know, its users are also called as publishers. Who are they? What is their Demographic? How many are they? How much they earn? These are few relevant questions that anyone would like to know.
Most of these publishers are young bloggers from around the world. Their age is anywhere in between 16 yrs old to 34 years old. They are very young and they love to do things which are different from mainstream.
Majority of these bloggers come from the urban parts of a particular country. Still it is very rare to find bloggers in rural part of a country. In India, these bloggers are mainly restricted to urban cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore etc.
Their income differs as it depends upon the content. Usually a normal blogger makes $200 to $300 per month. A good blogger could make $800 to $1000 per month and top notch bloggers make $10,000 to $50,000 per month. Just check these AdSense earnings strategy.
100,000 bloggers join WordPress blogging platform daily. So you can get an idea how many they are?
Bloggers are mainly individuals who create content on their own. However, there are publishers which do not blog as individuals. They have a team of writers to produce content on regular basis. In fact, they employ hundreds of content writers and editors. These publishers make 10 to 20 times more than an individual blogger.
Their monthly income could run into millions of dollars.
Some examples are

Gain for Publishers, Advertisers and Google

As I said earlier, publishers and advertisers alike benefit from Adsense program. And the Google itself is ultimate beneficiary of all this.
So, here we shall talk about their profits in greater detail.

Publishers

Publishers gain a lot from Google Adsense. If we talk of small publishers which are mainly bloggers then they are able to live a decent life as a result of money that they earn monthly.
In fact, these bloggers join blogging after they have left their regular 9 to 5 job & I one of the live example. You can read about my online career. These bloggers have so much confidence that after leaving their regular job they could make enough money for living. Moreover, there are individuals who begin their career as a blogger. It means, after graduation or high school they do not opt for a job but starts blogging.
Now, if we come to big publishers even they are gaining everything from Google Adsense. Apart for money that they make in millions every month, they are also able to build a brand of their own company.
With a solid brand these companies are able to reach-out their customers in an efficient manner.

Advertisers

Like publishers even advertisers benefit. The proof is that entire Adsense program runs on the advertiser’s money and publishers & Google itself earns from their money.
Hence, advertisers would only pour so much money if they get something out of it. Therefore, small business owners also benefit by selling their products to customers online.
Earlier, a small business owner was not able to reach out their customer’s, now with help of Adwords they could reach out to them very quickly.

Google

Finally, Google also benefits by taking 32% share from the amount paid by advertisers. Google sits between advertisers and publishers, so basically it takes away the 32% revenue in commission.
Thus Google is not just benefitting but generating hell lot of revenue from both programs Adwords as well Adsense.
All three, publishers, advertisers and Google gain from Adsense.

Other Competitors of Google Adsense Program or Alternatives for Adsense

Well! Google Adsense is not just one program when it comes to contextual advertisements. Adsense program is one of them.
So the question arises does Adsense faces competition from other programs in the market? The answer is yes, it does face some kind of competition from other contextual advertisement platforms.
Publishers and advertisers not always go for Adsense, at times they might give a try for other programs as well.
Some of the other programs on the line of Adsense are the following:
  1. Chitika
  2. Clicksor
  3. Kontera
  4. Adbrite
  5. BuySellAds
  6. eClickZ
  7. Amazon Associates
  8. Tribal Fusion etc
  9. Media.net
  10. Infolinks
To find more about these programs check – AdSense Alternatives
There are other ways of advertising like
1. Text Link Ads – You are paid for creating a link.
2. Infolinks – Here also you get money for creating a link that shows ads.
These programs may give a competition to Google Adsense. But it can be alternatives for publishers and advertisers both.
If publishers and advertisers for some reason do NOT like Adsense then they could try one of these programs mentioned above.
Hence, these programs give competition to Adsense but for publishers and advertisers they could be an alternative.

Why Google Adsense is the first choice for Publishers or Bloggers?

As we discussed Google faces stiff competition from other advertiser’s platform in the market. But even then Google Adsense is the first choice for bloggers.
So why publishers go only for Adsense program?
The first answer would be Google is the king on the Internet. Google dominates every other search network. Therefore, Google enjoys an ultimate authority. So, publishers or bloggers trust Google blindly.
Moreover, Google Adsense program is very easy to use and Google extends all its support that it can offer. If you have any doubt or problem related to putting ads or payments then you could reach Google without hesitation.
Google is always ready to help you.
Google now also allows placing other third party ads on your website, alternatives that we talked in last paragraph. Publishers can place ads from other programs along with Adsense ads and make more money.
In order to cut down the competition that Google faces from other platforms Google now allows ads from third party, earlier it was not allowed.
Google wants to ensure that publishers do not migrate to other platforms.
But the best part of Google that publishers like is Google are the best paymasters. Google delivers what it says. You get same amount that you earn on right time. So the pay check always reaches your home-address on-time.
Hence, these are few reasons why Adsense program is still preferred by bloggers to a large extent.

How Advertisers See Google Adsense Program?

Although advertisers do not have anything directly to do with Adsense but still this program affects them.
As we know Adsense and Adwords are interrelated. Advertiser will only benefit when his ads are placed on good content and we know content is always created by publishers.
Google has to place advertiser’s ads on the most relevant content so that an advertiser gets most out of it.
So an advertiser would always be interested how good publishers are creating content. If publishers are paid well from the side of Google then they would create good content eventually good content would help the advertiser’s business to grow.

Google Adsense in India and USA – A Comparison

Now we shall compare Google Adsense program in USA with India. How do publishers in India differ from their counterparts in USA? Is there any real difference?
Yes, there is a difference being publisher in India compared to USA. The first difference is the profit margins. In USA, publishers make 2 to 3 times more income than a publisher in India.
The cost per click (CPC) in USA is 4 times more than in India. For a click in USA you get $1 and in India a blogger gets only 20 cents. So blogger in USA makes more money even though the traffic or visitors coming to there blog is less than traffic coming in India.
Again the reason is simple in USA advertisers are willing to pay more. There an advertiser could be willing to pay $2 to Google for a click then publisher gets $1.36 and Google gets remaining.
But in India, advertisers pay only few rupees for a click. So the CPC in India is as less as 5 cents or 10 cents.
After all, USA is a developed economy so advertisers have more money to spend but India is still a growing economy so advertisers spend very less amount.
Hence, this is the big difference between Adsense users in USA and in India.

Top Successful Beneficiary of Google Adsense Program in India

Let us meet some successful Google Adsense publishers in India. They have become almost like an Internet celebrity. They could be inspiration for other bloggers in India.
  1. Amit Agarwal – Labnol.org
  2. Amit Bhawani – Amit Bhawani.com
  3. Arun Prabhudesai – Trak.in
  4. Jaspal Singh – SaveDelete.com

Lack of Transparency from the Side of Google

We discussed good things about Google Adsense. But there is a flipside of this program. You could say a doubt that arises in every publisher’s mind.
Although Google openly declares that it gives 68% to publishers of what advertisers pay them and takes 32%. But Google do not tell how much advertiser is actually paying them for a Click.
Publishers really do not know how much advertisers actually paid to Google.
Google could be paying publishers less because it does not declares the money paid by advertisers.
For example, an advertiser is paying $5 for a Click to Google, so with an honest intention Google should pay $3.40 for a click to publisher and take only $1.60 with itself.
But it can happen that Google only pay less than $3.40 say $2.00 to publishers, hence taking away another $1.40.
The reason for this suspicion is because Google does not declare that advertiser actually paid it $5.
Therefore, this lack of transparency gives rise to suspicion. This could be flipside of Adsense program.

Abuse of Google Adsense

There are frivolous bloggers who abuse Adsense program from around the world. Out of shear greed they start clicking on their own ads.
It is so naïve to even think that a blogger could make money by clicking his ads. Google will come to know the blogger and terminate his Adsense account forever.
Google is very strict when it comes to showing ads. Publishers can only show 3 ads on their page. If they try to click on those ads or telling others to click then Google will consider it illegal and terminate your account permanently.
Using software and tailored content to show Adsense ads is also banned by Google but frivolous bloggers use such tricks and end up on the wrong side.

Criticism of Google Adsense

Google is criticized by many publishers from Asia for not paying them as much as it pays to publishers in USA.
Then bloggers criticized Google for banning their account for no specific reason.
Sometimes Google terminates their account without paying the threshold income of $100.
Google is also criticized for showing sexually explicit ads on websites.
But the most genuine criticism of Google Adsense is the lack of transparency that we discussed in last-to-last paragraph.

Future of Google Adsense Program and its Affect on Publishers

Finally, we shall talk about the future of Adsense program and how it affects publishers.
According to me, future of Adsense is great in USA and outside USA. As internet is growing more and more people are joining it. They are in search of good content that they could read.
Hence Adsense program will ensure that publishers create quality content because they would get right remuneration.
Moreover, Google’s revenue totally depends upon advertisers and to make them happy, Google needs to show their contextual ads on good content. So Google needs Adsense platform in order to do that.
Hence Adsense program is very essential for its own survival.
So, the future of Adsense is very bright for publishers as well as Adsense itself...

So you must be wondering what’s that secret that can make your AdSense earnings as high as 3 times your current earnings and that too in 20 minutes. You have tried each & every way to increase your AdSense earning but there was no measurable change in your AdSense earning.
But I want to admit that this trick works. I have used this trick to many of my blogs & it worked very well on all my blogs.

AdSense Secret to Triple Your Income

Although its not a secret that there are only 2 ways you can increase your AdSense earning. I mean to say either by increasing your CPC or increasing your CTR. So my trick will show you how to increase your AdSense earning by increasing your CPC to 3 times.

How to increase your AdSense CPC?

Do you know what is average CPC in AdSense? In simple word, average CPC is calculated as your total AdSense earnings divided by total number of clicks. It means your earning is not same for all the clicks that you receive on your AdSense ads.
Your earning mainly depend on the advertiser. Each advertiser bid a different amount to get a place on our website. Some advertisers bid high, some advertisers bid good but there are many advertisers who bid very low CPC.
And just because of these low paying advertisers, your CPC drops considerably. If you can remove such advertisers who pay very less, you can maximize your AdSense earnings to 300%.

How to remove low paying advertisers in AdSense?

So if you want to remove these low paying advertisers from your website, it involves 3 steps-
  1. Finding all the advertisers on all pages of your website.
  2. Finding advertisers who pay very less (probably below 5 cents)
  3. Blocking these low paying advertisers
So lets understand how you can achieve this to triple your AdSense earning. It hardly takes more than 20 minutes to do this.

Finding all the advertisers on your website.

So first thing you need to do is get the list of all the advertisers URL who are showing their ads in your website. Never click on any of your ads to know the URL as it can give trouble to your AdSense account.
Instead use one of the best tool – Google AdSense Preview Tool
AdSense Preview Tool allows you to preview the ads that will show up on your page. It is of great help in avoiding unwanted ads, testing and optimizing content and setting ads format, color and placement.
It’s very easy to install AdSense preview tool. This is a registry file. Just download the file, double click on this to add to registry and you are ready to enjoy this tool.
You can use this tool in internet explorer version 6.0 & above.
Download AdSense Preview Tool
To install AdSense Preview Tool –
  1. Right click on the link, click ‘save as’ or ‘save target as’ & download at some location like your desktop or my documents.
  2. Double-click the file from your desktop or my documents. A confirmation window will appear – click Yes to continue. The registry update will self-install.
  3. Restart Internet Explorer by closing all open IE windows.
To use the tool, open any URL from your blog in internet explorer, then right click there, select ‘Google AdSense Preview Tool’ and click on this.
After clicking on the preview tool, you will find a popup window with the list of advertiser ads showing on your website like this-
adsense preview tool
You can find the AdSense URLs of the advertisers whose ads are shown in your website – Check all of them and Click on the Show selected URLs.
Tip – You will find different list of advertisers on different pages on your blog so check your analytics which are the most viewed pages on your websites & collect the list of advertisers from all important (most viewed) pages.
Copy all the URLs in a notepad. Now this is the list of all URLs showing ads on a particular webpage in your blog.  My next step will be to check how much these advertisers are paying i.e. what are the CPCs for these ads.

Find advertisers who pay very less

For this, I will use iSpionage tool. Just visit www.ispionage.com & enter one of the domain of the advertiser from the list which you have received from Google AdSense preview tool and click on Search.
Just refer the image below and check this properly-
low cpc advertisers
In this example –
  1. I visited the site www.iSpionage.com
  2. I opened my notepad where I saved the list of URLs which I received from Google AdSense Preview Tool.
  3. I copied one of the advertisers domain (e.g. MyPCBackup.com) name from the list and pasted this in the search box in the iSpionage.com search box and clicked on search.
  4. I used the free version only where I can see the top 10 results.
  5. I clicked the ‘Ads’ tab to see the Google Ads & I checked which are the ads with low CPC.
  6. I copied the destination URLs of these low CPC ads and saved in a notepad
  7. Similarly I used other advertisers to find out if their ads are paying low CPC.
  8. Then I repeat the procedure on my other important pages on my blog.
  9. This way I prepared a good list of all the advertisers URL who are paying me low CPC.
My next step will be to block the ads of all the low paying advertisers.

Blocking these low paying advertisers

Google AdSense has provided the facility to its publisher to block the advertisers you don’t want on your website. So I need to login to my AdSense account to block these low paying advertisers.
Login to your AdSense account -> Click ‘Allow & block ads’ & then click ‘Advertiser URL’s. Just enter the advertiser’s domain name of all advertisers who are paying low CPC & then click block URLs. That’s it. Just refer the image for more clarity-
block adsense ads
And you’re done. Wait for a couple of minutes and you will see that the low CPC ads are disappeared from your websites. Wow!!
The change with my AdSense earnings is really amazing. All it took was a few minutes to do this whole thing and it has increased the total AdSense revenue of my websites.

My attitude towards AdSense changed when I read about many of the internet marketers who were making 6 figure income from Google AdSense rather than affiliate marketing.
One & half years back I thought of giving AdSense a fresh try. I thought of making multiple AdSense sites and targeting my sites outside India.
I got so many new experiences with AdSense during this period.
One of the shocking experience was the CPC of my AdSense earnings from US and UK.
Many of the time, I received Google AdSense CPC more than the commission that I receiving by selling an average Clickbank product.

My Highest Google AdSense CPC

Just before focusing more on Google AdSense and thought of creating number of mini AdSense sites, I thought of checking my highest CPC from US, UK & India.
Just check here one of the screenshot that I received for my AdSense CPC from USA.
google adsense cpc
& here is the screenshot that I captured for my highest AdSense earnings CPC from UK.
highest-adsense-cpc
So its totally wrong to under estimate Google AdSense earnings as propagated by many top internet marketing gurus. I am having multiple AdSense sites which are giving me regular 7 figure monthly income from AdSense.
I have tried and tested both affiliate marketing and AdSense on many of my niche sites and found AdSense to be more effective on many of the sites.
Sometime, you need lot more hard work to make same income from affiliate marketing than you do for Google AdSense.
But yes, once you know a little secret about a market, there is nothing better than affiliate marketing. So both have their own importance in making money.

How can you be sure for better AdSense CPC

You need to choose your keywords wisely in order to get the highest CPC. You can take the help of Google AdWords keyword tool to know what is highest bidding for a particular keyword in a particular country by the advertiser.
Then you can write articles or create a site according to the keywords. Although there are many other factors that can decide you how much earnings per click you will receive from your AdSense ads but still you can be sure of getting some better CPC this way.
You will find many such articles on our site which will aim to provide you with some of the tricks and tools that can make your AdSense earnings sky rocketed.

Conclusion

I have shown you some of the highest CPC earnings on my AdSense ads but still my average earnings from US & UK is between US $1 to US $2.
If you are a serious AdSense publisher and if you are not focusing on many of such issues which can double or triple your AdSense earnings then you are losing so much of your earnings. Doing a little bit tricks can multiply your Google AdSense CPC and so is your AdSense earnings.

11 AdSense Tips And Tricks to Maximize Your Earning Potential

AdSense is a great tool for monetizing your website. Unfortunately, a large number of users fall prey to some common mistakes and never even realize that they’re functioning way below their maximum earning potential.
Here are a few AdSense tips that will help you optimize your website for both higher revenue and an enhanced user experience.

1. A/B test your ad units

ab testing
Experimenting allows you to pit one variation of ad settings against another variation and select the one that performs the best. You can compare the performance of text-only ad units to ad units that have both text and display enabled, or analyze the effect of changing the color of ad text on ad performance, or determine the impact on your revenue by serving ads in the sensitive and/or general categories.
Although you need a little tech-savvy to navigate your way through the entire process of preparing your experiment, creating your experiment, monitoring your experiment, and finally choosing your winner—it’s all well worth the effort.
(Note: If you’re looking for a smarter, automated solution for this, you could try out our advanced A/B testing software, which automatically creates ad multiple variations for you and then selects the combination that performs the best.)

2. Use multiple ad units to maximize conversion

multiple ads
A simple way to bump up your AdSense click rate and revenue is to place ad units of more than one type (AdSense for content, link, and search) and in different sizes on your pages. This way, your users are served more ads from Google’s large ad inventory, increasing the probability that they will end up clicking on one of them.
Make sure that the best-located ad on your web page shows up first in your HTML code. This will ensure that your most visible ad real-estate is taken by ads that place the highest in the auction—increasing your revenue.
And remember to adhere to the AdSense maximum ad policy, which is up to three AdSense for content units, up to three link units, and up to two search units on each page, to avoid having your account banned.

3. Limit the number of ads above the fold

limits above the fold ads
In web design terminology, “above the fold” refers to the portions of a web page that are visible without scrolling. When too many ad units are placed above the fold, users get turned off because finding the content that they came in for, gets difficult, and the tendency to exit the page increases. As a result of this, Google now penalizes such pages. Here’s an excerpt from the Google Webmaster Central blog:
As we’ve mentioned previously, we’ve heard complaints from users that if they click on a result and it’s difficult to find the actual content, they aren’t happy with the experience. Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads, users want to see content right away. So sites that don’t have much content “above-the-fold” can be affected by this change. If you click on a website and the part of the website you see first either doesn’t have a lot of visible content above-the-fold or dedicates a large fraction of the site’s initial screen real estate to ads, that’s not a very good user experience. Such sites may not rank as highly going forward.
We understand that placing ads above-the-fold is quite common for many websites; these ads often perform well and help publishers monetize online content. This algorithmic change does not affect sites that place ads above-the-fold to a normal degree, but affects sites that go much further to load the top of the page with ads to an excessive degree or that make it hard to find the actual original content on the page. This new algorithmic improvement tends to impact sites where there is only a small amount of visible content above-the-fold or relevant content is persistently pushed down by large blocks of ads.

4. Optimize the color impact of text ad units

create ad style
Experimenting with the color of text ad units is essential to increasing their visibility. An ad style that work on a light website theme may look too bright and distracting on a darker one, turning users away not only from the ad but from the web page.
For the most unobtrusive user experience, match the background and border color of the ad unit to the background of the page where the ad will be placed.
For a more distinct ad, match background and border colors to your website, but don’t match them exactly to where the ads are placed. Try out different styles and measure ad performance over time to settle on the best performing format.

5. Create and implement responsive ads

respnsive ads
This ties into a larger point of implementing a responsive design on your website (which is something you really need to do if you’re running a website in 2015). Wikipedia explains responsive design as follows:
Responsive web design (RWD) is an approach to web design aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, mobile phones).”
Last year, Comscore reported that mobile platforms — smartphones and tablets — combined account for 60% of total digital media time spent, up from 50% a year ago. If your website is not optimized for these devices, you’re missing out on a big opportunity to capture this audience.
So what does this have to do with AdSense, you ask? Well, AdSense plays well with responsive design, and allows you to generate codes for responsive ad units, which automatically resize themselves to offer the best viewing experience to the mobile audience. Do this now because that 60% is a number that’s only going to go north.

6. Link your AdSense and Analytics accounts

links adsense and analytics
Linking your AdSense and Google Analytics accounts gives you access to AdSense metrics such as revenue, clicks, and impressions which you can add to your favorite analytics reports to get a better understanding of how well your pages or content is monetizing.
This data can assist in optimizing your site such as the optimal ad load or what type of content to focus on.
Once you’ve linked your properties, you can use insights from Analytics to refine and optimize your AdSense ad units, improving the overall performance of your website.

7. Keep your design and content user-focused

In the mad race to increase ad revenues, it’s easy to lose sight of the real goal of why your website or business exists in the first place—to provide value to users.
Use a judicial mix of ads and content so that users are not overwhelmed by the former. Sometimes ads are placed haphazardly on the web page and in between content without any thought to usability or aesthetics.
Even Google says that to get the most of your account, you should first consider the user and then think about anything else. Doing it the other way around is like putting the horse before the cart, it’s never going to work.

8. Publish high-quality content on a regular basis

This really is the big one, the other points are all just tweaks in one way or another—but when it comes to AdSense earnings, content really is the king.
Simply put: No traffic, no money; more traffic, more money.
But this is always easier said than done. It helps to publish content about a topic that you’re both interested in and have some level of expertise in, as people will then be more likely to view you as an influencer on your topic.
Google’s algorithm rewards websites that publish content on a regular basis with a higher ranking, and consequently, higher traffic—so make sure your publishing is more predictable than erratic.
Finally, going the extra mile to optimize your content for search engines can yield great results in terms of organic traffic, especially, in the long run.

9. Build an audience before setting up AdSense

Though it may be tempting to set up AdSense on your website right after you’ve published the first piece of content—the temptation is best avoided.
Cluttering your website with ads before anybody really knows about it will likely put visitors off, and consequently, they’ll be less likely to share or link to it. This limits your ability to emerge as an authority in your niche.
Focus instead, on winning a sizable audience in terms of email subscribers, RSS readers, and monthly visitors before you start displaying ads.

10. Go easy with the blocking and filtering

Each ad that you block by URL will be one more ad that won’t be bidding for space on your website in the auction—effectively reducing the earning potential of that ad space.
Furthermore, advertisers whose ads you block may decide that they don’t want to advertize with you in the future. The same thing happens when you filter out entire categories, but on a larger scale. Don’t block ads unless it’s absolutely necessary.

11. Keep yourself updated

AdSense Policy Guide: All Policies Summarized in One Guide

Google has been criticized by the rather harsh policies relating to its AdSense publishers’ ad placements. Multiple high-earning publishers have had their accounts disabled and deleted due to violations of said policies. This is the reason that it is extremely important to familiarize yourself with the policies that AdSense has, which is where this guide aims to help you out. Providing you with a resource to find all the AdSense policies summarized efficiently into a single guide, you don’t need to waste time trying to search through forums and Google support for answers to questions anymore.

The Basics: Clicks and Impressions

1) An impression of an ad is when a visitor arrives at your site and Google AdSense displays an individual ad on your site for the visitor to see. Different types of ads count as a different number of impressions even when placed within the same type of ad placement unit, for example a vertical banner ad with two text advertisement units will count as two individual impressions, where as a vertical banner ad placement with a single image advertisement will count as a single impression. A good short video to clarify this even further can be found below –
  2) A click is when a visitor clicks on an advertisement that is placed there via Google AdSense. This is where the money is made, as each click is worth a certain amount of money to the publisher, depending on the targeted keywords and niches. However, because clicks are the money makers to you, they are carefully and strictly monitored by Google. Any type of foul play and you’re out.
3) You are not allowed to manually or automatically enhance the number of impressions or clicks that you receive. This means you cannot click on your own ads, you cannot have all your friends come to your site and click on your ads multiple times or set up a bot that clicks on your ads, as all of these methods of boosting the clicks on your advertisements are considered sabotage by Google. Google will catch up with you and your AdSense account is forever lost, and the policy is only one account per person. That means once you’re out, you’re out for good, so be careful!
This however is not a matter over which you should lose any sleep, Google AdSense employees are experts on click fraud and won’t punish you if you accidentally click on your own advertisement. They can detect that you yourself clicked the advertisement, and will not credit you for it, easy as that. It’s only when it gets repetitive and cannot be treated as accidental behavior that your account is under threat.
You are also forbidden to encourage people clicking on your ads in any way, or placing them so that they are accidentally clicked by your visitors. The AdSense policy is clear on this, all visitors must click on the advertisements out of their own interest to what is being advertised to them. The advertisements must also always be clearly separate and distinguishable from the rest of your content and website.
4) If a visitor on your site is causing suspicious clicks on the advertisements you have placed on your site, take note of their activities and report them to Google via this link. It is crucial that you report your findings so that Google can investigate the original cause of the invalid clicks, and it clears you of any wrongdoing to begin with. You can refer to Google’s webmaster tools should you need any help in monitoring your site and its visitors.
5) In a case you wish to visit the destination page of an advertisement showing on your website, you can use the AdSense publisher toolbar, which allows you to inspect the advertisement without risking the closure of your account by clicking on your own advertisements. More information regarding this tool can be found here. Google cannot block IPs that you provide them as the addresses can be allocated from numerous different sources, leading to the potential blocking of valid clicks when, for example, a proxy is used by a violator.
6) Google does not disclose exactly how it monitors your advertisement clicks and impressions in case of a shared computer, but they assure both publishers and advertisers that there is no risk in a click being resulted from an interested visitor sharing the same IP address as the site owner. A click such as that is counted as a valid and interested click by a potential customer. Impressions are also safe, both by you yourself and people sharing your IP address. Excessive refreshing is not recommended, but Google is able to monitor your use and if the impressions are normal and appear when maintaining or using your own site, you are not at risk of violating any policies.
7) Whether you posted a video that went absolutely viral, or your latest funny Tweet caused a rush hour in traffic coming to your site, you might ponder whether or not you must inform Google why there is suddenly an increased number of visitors to your site. This is not the case, as the monitoring methods that Google applies are highly advanced and can detect this type of surges in traffic and considers them safe as long as the visitors are genuine and not there to commit click fraud.
8) Advertisers pay for each click that results in a new visitor the site they are advertising, and part of that money is taken by Google as a commission, and the rest goers to you, the publisher. However, Google has to protect their advertisers to keep them advertising in the future as well, which means any invalid clicks detected by the Google system are not credited to you. The clicks will show in the statistics for you to see, but will not result in a payment, because Google does not charge the advertiser for invalid clicks.
9) Using your own AdSense for search box to conduct Google searches is not recommended, as the use of Google.com will generate better search results, and keep you safe from accidentally clicking on your own advertisements. You are allowed to watch videos with video ads on your site, since the pressing of play button is not considered a click. However, refrain from clicking the advertisement itself when watching videos with your advertisements on them.

Rules and Policies: AdSense Content Guidelines

— Your content is what gets you approved for AdSense in the first place, so it must be in good standing before making the application, but must also be kept within the AdSense policies after being accepted into the program.
What type of content is prohibited then?
A good rule of thumb is to consider whether or not you’d allow your children or anyone else’s children see or read the material. If the answer is no, then most likely it will already break the rules.
— Basically anything pornographic or adult (Not Safe for Work) content is prohibited from being used as a display case for AdSense ads. A family-safe site is a proud thing for Google to have, and they want anyone showing their ads to respect their wish. If you operate an adult site you should look for advertising opportunities elsewhere. Also, Google categorizes mail order brides in the same way it does adult/sexual dating sites and escort services (so you better not be reviewing those mail order brides from different countries on an AdSense monetized site).
An important factor to consider regarding adult content is that you are also not allowed to link to adult content, which means review and promotional websites for adult purposes are out of the question. Adult content includes graphical content, but is not limited to that. It is good to keep in mind that Google considers erotic/explicit stories or jokes, forums and comment spamming to be adult content, and thus must be kept separate from AdSense advertisements.
— Racism, sexism and any other type of harassing or bullying content is strictly forbidden. As Google puts it, “Google believes strongly in the freedom of expression, but also recognizes the need to protect the quality of the AdSense network for users, advertisers, and publishers.” This means that if you wish to have content related to anything fitting those descriptions, the only way it is allowed is that your site is a historical journal and you are doing research or writing historical journals about such matters. Sexual tips and health is also out of bounds for AdSense publishers, so for those male sexual organ enlargement advertisements you’ll have to go elsewhere.
— If you don’t own your content’s copyright, don’t put it on your site. Under the copyright law you are allowed to cite, quote or use parts of copyright protected work when properly referenced and credit is given to the original author of the material that you are referring to. Naturally, the original author retains every right to ask you to remove the quotations of their work from your site, even if you credit them. Copyright infringement is one of the clearest and easiest to bust cases of policy violation when it comes to Google’s AdSense, so make sure you have a permission to publish any copyrighted material you are considering to publish, and if quoting someone else’s work, for example a case study on a topic you are writing about, make sure to link to the case study and credit its original author or authors in full. A good blog post regarding Google’s compliance of the DMCA complaints can be found here.
— Don’t try to use AdSense ads on your site if you promote alcohol products or tobacco, not to mention drugs or other similar illegalities. Also linking directly to sites which promote said substances is a violation of AdSense policy. Content that is factual and informative is allowed to be about the substances, but it must in no way be attempting to promote, sell or tempt anyone to use or purchase said substances.
— Any form of hacking or cracking of software, games or anything else related to this niche is a direct violation of Google’s content policy. A good thing to remember is that if it’s illegal, don’t put AdSense ads on it. There is an AdSense wide ban on anything illegal to be within the sites showing their advertisements.
— Other types of content that are forbidden include: Pay-to click sites (for example opening emails and clicking on advertising links to earn money), websites that use the Google brand without express permission, violence promoting and violence filled sites, and also anything weapon related. Sorry arms dealers, but you’ll have to fund your weapon review sites in other ways.
User generated content is a challenge to monitor as many of you know, but Google requires you to do so and holds you responsible for every piece of content that appears on the same page as your AdSense ad code. They recommend you to educate your users on these same policies to make sure they understand what is require of them as well as you. Before placing your ad code you should inspect the content on that specific page where the ad code will be based, and it is also recommended for you to weekly monitor the most popular pages of your website. Don’t forget to clean up the comments section, as that is where most of the spammers try to spread their advertising and AdSense policy violating content. Report violation buttons as well as keyword filtering to prevent certain keywords from appearing on your website are also recommended to help you monitor and prevent policy violations on your site.
— Google search does make it rather simple for you to find violating content from your site, and we recommend you to try this method regularly to make sure you comply with AdSense policies and your site features user generated content. Go to Google.com and type in the search bar “site:yoursite.com keyword” and press enter. Now, what this does is it only shows results originating from your site and features that specific keyword in them. Remember to change the “yoursite.com” part to your actual domain address, and the keyword to any policy violating keyword you can think of, such as sex, escort, hacking, tobacco, alcohol, weapons or drugs.
— Google has put together top three methods to use when policing your websites content, and this top three is a must for every webmaster hosting user generated content on their website. First, do not post your ad code on a page featuring content that you do not trust. This means that if you know the writer or they have written for you on multiple previous occasions, you can be rather certain they will abide the AdSense policies. Secondly, include a report a violation link after every piece of content, so that your other users can inform you when a possible policy violation appears on your website. Last but not least, put a Captcha check on your content posting system, and do not allow users to post on the site without Captcha verification.
— Other good measures of policing your content are to allow only trusted users to post content on your website, and not enable the advertising on any page until it has been manually checked by you or another member of your staff. Content filtering is another method of effective policing, but it requires for you to develop a content filtering system for your site. Many existing solutions can be found with a quick Google search, and we recommend you to give them a try. The policing of your user generated content can be a challenge, but you don’t have to do it all alone. If you can afford it, hiring content reviewers or editors to help you go through each piece of submitted content is a great way to reduce your workload.
— These rules apply to other forms of user generated content as well, not just websites and articles. Sites where users can comment on posts and pages need to be monitored for policy violating comments. Good methods to ensure your comment section stays clean is to actively respond to them, and at the same time you can clean the section up from spam. Spam filters such as Akismet are also amongst the popular solutions especially amongst WordPress users.
— Forums, dating sites and file hosting sites are also required to follow these same policies regarding the user generated content. Any offensive, NSFW or other form of policy violating content is forbidden, and must be actively monitored and removed. Report a violation links, Captcha checks upon registration, content filters and enabling ads only after you are certain the user and content can be trusted are effective methods of policing these types of sites.

Rules and Policies: AdSense Webmaster Guidelines

— As a webmaster, you must take full responsibility of your sites features, content and advertisement placements. Google does not allow you to have any “bad” SEO work on your site, which means repetitive use of keywords (keyword stuffing), hidden links and text, duplicate content or any other sketchy attempts of boosting your site’s performance in the SERPs (Search engine results page). Creating sub-domains or multiple pages that essentially feature duplicate content is forbidden, and will results in the termination of your account in the AdSense program.
— Your site must be of value to the visitors, so make sure to keep in mind the reasons why people arrive to your site. If the reasons include bots, pop-ups and redirects, it is recommended to revise those reasons or stay away from the AdSense program entirely. Also, the website must be made for the visitor, not for the search engines, so any type of “doorway” pages that are created with the sole intention of ranking highly for specific keywords are recognized by Google’s monitoring system and your AdSense participation will be at risk.
— AdSense is also not recommended to be used on affiliate sites, for which the sole purpose is to lead people to purchase goods or software via cookie traced links that in return gives the webmaster a commission of a successful purchase. This does not mean you cannot place affiliate links to a site which features AdSense advertising, but the focus of the site must not be on affiliate advertising, but instead the content must be the main reason for visiting the site, not a review of a product that is aimed at selling the product, instead of providing an honest and not a pushy review of said product. Further information on the affiliate guidelines can be found here if you are left with any questions, but the rules regarding affiliate sites are rather simple. If the site does not feature good, original content or it solely focuses on promoting masses of cookie traced links to products, then leave AdSense out of it.
— On a more technical approach, make sure your site is clearly indexed and your files are properly organized to ease the crawling process made by Google’s spiders. Keep your title elements and ALT attributes clear and focused, and do not try to overly enhance the number of times a keyword appears on your site. A more natural feel and keyword density will guarantee you a better standing in the eyes of Google, who appreciate value to the visitor, not keyword stuffing. Optimizing your website for speed and ease of use is also a relevant factor in the eyes of Google, so make sure to use tools such as WebPagetest and YSlow to monitor and optimize the site speed. An excellent resource in relation to webpage speed and load time is the Let’s Make The Web Faster section in the Google Developers tool set.
— Most importantly, keep your content unique and written by humans, and consider if you would find it a useful and helpful read yourself. Google will notice automatically generated content, cloaking, affiliate link promotion on a website without sufficient value, scraped content, duplicate content, hidden links or text, abusing the rich snippets mark up, stuffing irrelevant keywords to the content and creating pages with malicious intentions such as phishing or inflicting viruses on the visitors.

Rules and Policies: AdSense Traffic Source Guidelines

— Google actively monitors the traffic coming to sites taking part in the AdSense program, since the quality of that traffic can vary greatly. Bad quality traffic would only waste the money of paying advertisers, creating worse ROI for the advertisers. That would then affect their willingness to advertise with Google, so for their own sake they have to keep themselves informed about your traffic.
— When promoting your site, make sure not to spam anyone, not via social media, email or any other form of mass communication. Pop-ups that redirect the visitor to unwanted websites are also against Google AdSense policies, and should not be even considered to be used simultaneously with AdSense. Using any software or applications such as toolbars to display Google ads, search boxes or search results is against the policy on sites that display AdSense advertisements. If your site contains AdSense ad code you must make sure that no software interferes with the site navigation by redirecting the visitor, launching pop-ups, modifying browser settings or in any other way. If you use other ad networks, you must make sure they do not use any methods that interfere with site navigation either.
Your advertising generated traffic should be promised only what they will receive, and follow Google’s Landing Page Quality Guidelines to be on the safe side. The visitor must easily identify what they are being promised and absolutely no attempt of misleading is allowed.
Additionally, use of any sites offering paid traffic is against the policies.

Rules and Policies: AdSense Ad Placement & Ad Behavior Guidelines

— Although Google recommends webmasters to try out different ad placements, layouts and campaigns on their site, it is not allowed to place AdSense advertising on such places as pop-ups, emails or software. You must also not implement AdSense advertising in a way that it promotes accidental clicks of said advertisement. The advertisements must be clearly distinguishable from the surroundings. No flashy arrows or animations are allowed to draw unwanted attention, if the user wishes to click on the advertisement, they will do so on their own initiative. The advertisements must also be labelled as such, not anything misleading like “resources” or “helpful links”. Only two labels are ever allowed, and those are “Advertisements” and “Sponsored Links”.
— Integration of mobile ads is allowed with AdMob as part of Google’s mobile application advertising effort. However, that is a separate section of advertising, and any other form of software must not include Google search results, search bars or advertisements. Pop-ups and pop-unders are also strictly forbidden, as they do not adhere to the willingly clicking on the advertisement policy.
— Spamming of any form that includes a Google advertisement is forbidden, whether it is executed via social media, chat apps, forums, email or website commenting. Also websites that are purposefully built to be filled with ads and forcing visitors to click them are both in violation of AdSense policies. You also must not encourage anyone to click on the advertisements in any way, such as using phrases like “Contribute to this website by clicking advertisements” or “Take a look at our sponsors!”
— No image association with any of the advertisements is allowed, meaning you must keep images you place on the website separate and not affecting people’s view or opinion of the advertisements. Also, content should be placed above the fold, and not allowing an advertisement to push all the real content below the fold is a good way to keep the advertisements distinguishable from the content. You may also not format any links, content features or images to look like the advertisements.
— When it comes to advertisement behavior, the publishers are allowed to modify the ad placements and behavior of the adverts as long as it does not inflict any harm upon the advertiser. A more in depth resource for the modification of the AdSense code can be found here.
— The sites on which Google advertisements are shown should be easily accessible, easy to navigate on and not forcing redirects. Pop-ups are also included as distracting site behavior. Google also recommends a distance of at least 150 pixels between a flash based game on your website and an advertisement that is close by. This allows the user to clearly distinguish between the two, and no accidental clicks will incur as a result of the game’s placement.
— The current limitations on advertisement numbers that are provided by AdSense allow the publisher to display a maximum of three AdSense units on one page of content. On top of these three ad placements, publishers are allowed to place three link units and two search boxes per page. Both desktop and mobile websites are under the same policy requirements and limitations. More than one large ad unit may not be placed on a single page, with a large ad unit being defined as anything similar or larger in size as the 300×600 format that AdSense provides publishers with. To optimize your ad placements, it is not recommended to always aim for the maximum number of advertisements, but rather the most efficient way of placing advertisements that interest your visitors. Cluttered look is not the most efficient way to do that.
— No pre-rolls before a visitor can access certain content, such as videos or images is allowed, and the advertisements cannot auto-refresh without the permission of the visitor. In addition to these restrictions, publishers are not allowed to place advertisements on any thank you, exit, log in or error pages. This might result in the visitor thinking that the advertisement is in fact part of the site’s actual content, and end with an involuntary redirect away from the publisher’s website.
— AdSense advertisement is not to be placed on any site focusing on messaging, chat or auto-refreshing comments. Email is not an accepted form of delivering AdSense advertising, not even as part of a newsletter that the recipient has subscribed to. No toolbars, search boxes, desktop applications or their installers can be monetized with AdSense advertising. Additionally, if your sites features more than three pop-ups that were not deliberately initiated by the visitor, you are not permitted to place AdSense advertisements anywhere on the site.
— You are allowed to display AdSense advertising on membership sites that are password protected, but remember to provide Google with a non-password page to review. Two separate AdSense accounts may display advertisements on the same page if the webmasters and owners of the site and both of the AdSense accounts agree to do so. However, the maximum limitations on the number of advertisements still applies and is at the original limits.
— You may also place ads on hosted blogs and websites like Blogger, but you might run into problems if you do not have access to the HTML source code of your chosen platform, as that is where you need to place the ad code. If you are framing, i.e. displaying another site within your site, you are prohibited from displaying AdSense advertising on those pages.
— Acceptable modifications of AdSense code include responsive design to better fit the advertisements on a mobile device’s screen, A/B testing of ad placements and their effect on clicks, ad tag minimisation and setting custom channels dynamically. Google automatically uses the visitors IP address to modify whether or not the advertisement will display in a new window or not when clicked. This is a result of some countries, such as China, that treat opening advertisements in a new window as completely normal. This is a function you are under no circumstances allowed to interfere with or modify. Any attempt to do so will result in removal of your account.

Cookies Policy

— You must acknowledge that Google and third parties might place cookies on the browsers of your visitors and track their internet usage. The privacy policies that Google adheres to when handling the customer data is stated in the Google’s advertising privacy policies section of their site. Other than that, the data collected is solely at your disposal, granted that Google is also allowed to use it for their advertising purposes.
— Under no circumstance are you allowed to convey data that would allow Google to identify any of your users to Google. They do not want to have any private data sent to them by you, because they have no wish to use it. Keep it to yourself.

Rules and Policies: Privacy Policy

— Apart from not being allowed to send any identifying data to Google, you must clearly state your cookie and privacy policies to your visitor and users. The privacy policy on your site should include the different third-parties, such as Google, that follow your visitors with cookies, and that Google uses DoubleClick cookies to be able to target their advertising better and gear it towards the visitor. You should also include the option to opt out from interest-based advertising via the Ads Settings.
— You should also provide the visitor with links to the appropriate third-party vendors and their advertising and cookie settings. You can also link to aboutads.info and explain to your users that they can use said website to opt out of some third-party interest-based advertising programs.
— You are also advised to link to Google’s explanation of their usage of your customers’ information here: How Google uses data when you use our partners’ sites or apps.
Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)
— If your site is covered by COPPA you must notify Google of the site or sections of the site under the coverage, and not target adverts toward children under the age of 13 or follow the past or current activity of children under the age of 13.
Gambling
— Google does not allow gambling related content or gambling sites to display AdSense advertisements, unless your country is in the select group of countries where this is legal. The countries included on this list are Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom.
The regulations are stringent, however, and always individually assessed based on your site. The allowance of AdSense ads on gambling websites is thus never a done deal.
Conclusion
In conclusion, if you keep it legal, you are safe from Google closing your AdSense account. Keep your wits about you when placing AdSense advertisements on new sites after you have already been accepted, since that way Google employees will not check your website in advance to you placing the advertisements. This makes it easier for you to get removed from the AdSense program. Adhering to these policies is easy, but you have to be awake when designing your ad placements and strategies. If you find yourself wondering about anything AdSense policy related, want to find more detailed guidelines or just want to read further into the AdSense policies, Google has an excellent “More Resources” section that lists numerous tips, tricks and guides into everything from optimizing your site to preventing invalid clicks and displaying flash games on your site.

Adsense CTR – Everything you need to know!

In the Internet marketing world, CTR (click through rate) matters a lot, not only for advertisers but also for the publishers. The main role of an advertiser is to create an ad or copy that can get higher CTR. Similarly, publishers need to place these ads in a way that they generate highest CTR for them. From a publisher’s viewpoint, click through rate is one of those essential factors that help them generate money and retain advertisers. If you somehow fail to give adequate clicks, your advertisers are likely to flee. Therefore, let us dive into the world of click through rate and understand what exactly it is.

What is Adsense CTR?

CTR or click through rate is the relationship between impressions and clicks. Out of the number of times your ad or search result is shown to a visitor, how often users click it and not ignore it. This metric is among some of the most important benchmarks of your toolset for online marketing. It is vital for you to understand its importance in terms of online success. In a nutshell, click through rate is the number of times an ad is clicked divided by the number of times the page or ad unit is viewed. In other words, it is the ratio between number of page views and number of click on the advertisement.
CTR = No. of clicks / No. of exposures
CTR% = No. of clicks * 100 / No. of exposures
For instance, if you have an advertisement running on your website/blog and it is viewed by 100 people. If 5 of them click on the ad, your CTR would be 5 percent. On a PPC Model, the higher the CTR percentage is, the better earnings your site will generate for you. Therefore, it is important to place the ad in such a way they are viewable and at the same time not obtrusive. Striking a balance here is important to generate ad earnings over a longer term.
You must be wondering what a good CTR is. I’ve seen websites performing from anywhere between .05% to whopping 10%. It primarily depends how much time you are spending to optimize your website for more clicks and what niche the website is about. More about this later, but you should also know that the average CTR for the display advertising industry is about .10%. Then you also have many publishers out there who are getting considerable clicks on their Adsense Ads but their revenue is pretty low. Let us cut out the myth once and for all. Getting a huge number of clicks on Adsense advertisements will not guarantee good income. There are a number of other factors involved. For one thing, you need to targets the ads that can give you good PPC. Sometimes a single click earns you more than 100 clicks. It all boils down to the eCPM or actual earnings. There are ways using which you can measure the eCPM for ad units/types and optimize it.

What is a good Adsense CTR?

It is strange how everyone is looking for a satisfactory answer to one question: what is a good click through rate for Adsense? Let us attempt an answer. It is necessary for you to understand that it is against Adsense TOS to reveal exact statistics about your account and of course, the CTR. Therefore, it would not be possible to pepper up the article with real life examples.
While some blogs do everything to increase their click-through-rate and fail to increase it more than 1 percent, others do get close to the double figures. Majority of the bloggers have CTR between .50-to-3-percent-range. At this rate, not only blog or website earn a decent amount, but it also stays pretty safe. One the other hand, if your ad units get too many clicks and high CTR, your Adsense account will be exposed to certain risks.
You must be wondering if you can compare your CTR with other blogs. Unless you know the blogger personally, there is no benchmarking tool to that for you. Even the Adsense Scorecard, which google calls a benchmarking tool, does not really compare you with our peers in terms of CTR.

Why is it difficult to compare CTR?

Comparing CTR, and a number of other Adsense statistics, is difficult because every website/blog is incredibly different. Comparison might even be pointless at times.
Why? Because the number of people who click on an advertisement vary tremendously, depending on a number of factors. Outlined below are some of the factors that play an important role in deciding your click through rate:
CTR varies between different Niche
Surprisingly, CTR varies tremendously from one blog/website to another, even if your blogs have every other factor controlled. The simplest reason that comes to mind is the topic of the blog. For instance, many publishers believe that websites with products related topics appear to get higher click-through-rate than other sites. Their argument is pretty valid. According to them, people tend to click on ads more when they are in buying mode. When they see an ad that meets their requirements or is about the relevant product, they are much more likely to click on the advertisement. Even if they don’t want to buy that product, visitors feel good to explore and find more details about it, which will help them make a decision in the future.
CTR might vary seasonally
CTR as well as CPC can, in fact, vary seasonally. The Adsense team mentions about this on its support page. For instance, there are countless blogs out there who claim to have higher CTR on weekends. While some have pretty low impressions throughout holidays, some feel that the holiday season, can generate huge variations in CTR. Of course, these variations vary from website to website, considerably depending upon the visitor demographics.
Relevant Ads
Let take this one with an example. Let’s say you’ve got a blog about ballpoint pens. Which ads do you thinks have more probability of being clicked – ballpoint pen ads or dog food ads? Of course, your visitors are interested in ballpoints and they will click on ads relevant to what you are talking about on your blog. In almost all cases, the more relevant the advertisements are to the subject/niche of your blog, the more likely they are to get clicked.
While there could be few blogs with topics that are difficult for Google to distinguish, but generally Adsense is quite good at this. They have ads for almost all verticals and niches.
There have also been a few cases where bloggers have contacted Google about irrelevant ads, and Google has made changes to fix the problem. In order to optimize your CTR further, you can also block advertisers which are irrelevant to your domain, if you see their ads/creatives appearing regularly on your ad units.
CTR varies on the basis of your Visitor Profile
It has been repeatedly reported that websites and blogs with higher level of repeat (loyal) readers have lower click-through-rate as compared to the ones that have high search engine traffic. The only logical reason to this problem is that your loyal readers become blind to not only your website design, but also the ad positioning, which is why Continuous Ad optimization is needed for a website to maintain a higher CTR. Repeat visitors mainly look at the content, you share with them, so mixing ads in the content, makes sense too. Search-Engine visitors, on the other hand, are mostly looking for specific information. They normally take action, which puts them in an information gathering mode. As a result, they are more likely to click the ads on your website or blog.
Another group of readers is the one that is referred to your website or blog by another website. Such readers can choose any course of action, depending entirely on what the referrer is all about. However, most of the times, CTR is low for such readers. Therefore, do not expect too much from refered traffic.
What’s around the Ad unit?
There are many design factors that can affect the CTR. You need to be very careful here though. You should not, in any case, draw extra attention on the ads by creating animated graphics or putting them inside a obtrusively colored box. This will only lead to an account ban. However, there are many Adsense publishers out there who have developed some subtle, clever ways to draw the attention of their readers towards the ads.
One important technique that does not break any Adsense TOS is to utilize the areas around your advertisements to your advantage. However, Stats have shown that advertisements perform far better on a clear, white background and white space around them. Why don’t you test between different designs, and see what happens?
Placement/Location of the advertisements
An important factor for click-through-rate is the design and positioning of the advertisements on your blog or website. For instance, if you put the ads on the very bottom of the page, there is a chance that very few people will see them, which will definitely result in very low CTR. You don’t want that, do you? Therefore, you should always position the ads where they can be seen and clicked easily. The same is the case with the colors you choose for the ads. Select the right colors and you are definitely going to improve your CTR.
  • Place ads above the fold.
  • Merging them with the content.
  • Using Wider, instead of longer Ad units.
  • Using either a similar or contrasting color theme [Test what works best].
Click-Through-Rate varies depending on other option to ‘click’
Does your blog contain any outbound links other than the Adsense ads? If your answer is NO, there are more chances of your visitors to click on those particular links. There are countless bloggers out there who are using this technique to increase their revenue. All they do is drive traffic to their website through useful, high-quality content and do not have any other outbound links. Their click-through-rate is normally higher than the pages with outbound links. Of course there are a few problems with this technique, since you would not be able to interlink your blog. This will not only make your site insular, but also makes search engine optimization difficult. De-clutter your blog for better results!

How important is CTR?

Click-through-rate is the most important and heavily weighed part of quality score. What is the first thing Google looks to when trying to get the feedback of users on advertising text? Of course, CTR! If a particular ad has a higher click-through-rate, it means that majority of the users find it useful and relevant to what they are searching. Relevancy is the second most important component. Google considers the relevancy of your keyword to an advertisement. Similarly, google uses CTR to understand the relevancy of an advertisement to your website and maintains a quality profile for your website. Sites with very low CTR, could be considered poor in terms of quality (exceptions being there) while the sites with very high CTR, are suspected for activities against google’s policies and have to go through automated and manual reviews.

How to increase Adsense CTR

Content is the king. You must have read this statement a hundred times, and it is absolutely true. High-quality content is something that makes your visitor stay on your site and click on the ads. Besides, making a couple of changes to your ads’ placement and types can also boost your click-through-rate. Outlined below are some tricks you should follow to get your desired results.

1. Epic Content

This is the most important tip anyone can give you increasing your click-through-rate. Great content brings more visitors, resulting in more revenue. Rather than creating countless useless sites made just for making some quick bucks, take some time out and build impressive content for your blog. Writing high-quality content is undoubtedly the way to go. It will not only help with your click-through-rate, but will also allow you to leverage on premium SEO. Moreover, it will allow Google to place targeted ads on your blog for your audience. Having more relevant ads is the only way to lure your visitors to click them and boost your overall earning.

2. Advertisement Placement

You need to test different placements, positions and combinations for advertisements on your blog. Avoid putting ads on random positions, since it will have a negative impact on CTR and your earnings. What you should be doing is trying out different colors, types and sizes of ads in order to see what works best for your website. Moreover, you need to keep switching the ad positions. This technique works pretty well with your regular visitors. Since your loyal readers visit your blog regularly, they start ignoring the ads if they are placed on the same position all the time. This is known as the “banner blindness”. Periodic change in the placement of ads is the only way to cope with this problem.
Do you get frequent suggestion from Google? Majority of bloggers just ignore these emails from Adsense. You should not. Read what they have to say and then test if its correct.

3. Modifying the ads

Always try new things. Try Modifying the advertisement colors to more bright versions rather than standard adsense colors. Majority of the Adsense enabled blogs or websites utilize the standard colors and visitors get used to it. Changing the colors frequently to brighter shades allow the ads to stand out from the rest of your blog’s content. It will definitely grab the attention of your visitors. Also, you need to make the font of your ads bigger than the content font. This will allow the user to see the ad immediately. It will make the ads prominent, increasing the chances of clicks.

4. Remove unwanted ads

Do you have a lot of posts or pages? Just remove all those ads from the places that do not convert (use heatmaps!) and have very low CTR. De-clutter your blog. After doing this you’ll see that clicks are no more wasted through unwanted, crappy posts.

5. Suitable Keywords

Keywords play a very important role in gaining search engine traffic. Since visitors coming from search engines contribute most to the CTR, it is vital for you understand the importance of choosing the right keywords. Here is a case study showing how you can increase your CTR and Adsense income:

Case Study

The cash you make from Adsense is controlled by quite a number of variables, such the number of visitors you get to your blog, the amount of money advertisers are paying in your particular niche and the percentage of visitors that click the advertisement. Clearly the more ads pay you, the more users you are getting and the more they are clicking on your ads the more money you will make.
We have carefully chosen two websites with similar layout. Therefore, neither of the factors is going to have any considerable effect, apart from the possibility of visitors to these websites to react differently to the content....

The very first thing you might notice between the two websites is that they have very different click-through-rates. The first site or site 1 has an average click-through-rate of 23.33 percent, while the other one has an average of 3.95 percent. When you compare the results, the first site is clearly leading in terms of clicks. It gets 6 times more clicks than the second one. This means that we can increase our revenue 6 times if we know what to do, can’t we?
If both these websites have similar layout, color scheme and design, what exactly is causing these tremendous differences? The answer is all in the suitable keywords. Site 1 targets a “buyer” keyword, while Site 2 targets an informational keyword. For instance, if we take the example of dating niche, Site 1 would be about the finest dating sites you can join, while Site 2 would be about tips and tricks on how to meet the partner of your dreams, etc…
It is possible that the same advertisers are offering the same products. However, Site 1 attracts people who are ready to make a buying decisions and all they are looking for is a little help and encouragement. On the other hand, Site 2 will convert only a few people since most of the visitors will be looking for some free advice or information. You must understand that it is not just the niche in general that has such an incredible effect on adverts; it is the relevance that counts a lot. Considering the same example of dating niche, the Site 1 offers information on dating sites, so the ads are related to those sites. This shows that the content of the website and the ads are incredibly close. On the other hand, the Site 2 might offer general information about dating, meeting people, starting a conversation, etc., but if the ads are promoting dating eBooks and websites, there is very little in common between the Adsense ads and the content of the site. This affects CTR to a great extent.
